What I Learned From Making A Website

I need one more page before I can launch the site, so I decided to write one on the different things I've learned while trying to peice this website together. I'm also linking this to the about page because it serves a very similar purpose. There are a few things that I didn't know before that would have been really helpful to know when I first was trying to create the website. I've also written a couple words of motivation for anybody unsure on whether they should go through with making a site or any other endeavour. If you're reading this and want to make your own personal website I totally encourage it because it's pretty fun. You could consider this sort of a pro tips page except for I'm not a pro and I don't even know if the tips are helpful so lets get right into it.

Make it work before you make it look nice.

I once heard the saying that, "You can just make the graphics now and the rest of it will sort itself out." That is NOT true. So many times I tried to create a website using HTML and CSS and all I ended up with was a mess of CSS and a top bar that didn't even do anything. I recommend that first you figure out what you want the layout to be on paper. Draw out where everything will go. Once that makes sense you can start to block out the project using HTML. I recommend keeping the CSS really basic at first. Just use it for positioning and to see your different div sections and things. Once you have the frontend layout you can start to work on the backend. You could use flask like me or find another program that suits you or if you just want a really simple page you don't even need a complex backend. When and only when you have at least some basic functionality on the backend should you start to make your website look nice and presentable.

If your first idea doesn't work, try another.

Like I've said, I had so many failed attempts before I locked in and got one working. I ping-ponged between retro and modern/minimalist styles. Nothing was working. In the process of creating the website you are reading these words on right now, I nearly gave up 4 separate times. At first it was because I couldn't find the right software to do all of my backend in. Then it was bugs and issues with my code that took a while to iron out. If I hadn't decided to give it one more shot all of those times, you wouldn't be reading this. I cannot stress this enough. DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS no matter how many times you have to start over or innovate a new solution, you need to keep trying to make that dream come true. If you need a break that's fine. If you end up with something that looks different but you're completely satisfied, that's fine. But if you decide that it's just not worth it to keep going? I hate to say it but your wrong. It's not a waste of time until you stop trying. So keep going.

It doesn't have to be all at once.

When I finally got my website working, I had a big problem. Sure the page system was nice and all, but I didn't have any pages. I didn't even have any ideas for pages. I thought surely this site will never even get off the ground because I don't have any content to put onto it. So I went to bed, racking my brain for anything interesting enough to write a blog about. I needed something that I was passionate on. Something that mattered to me. I thought about the domain name. Goblin Pizzas. I bought it to use as a domain for a Minecraft server with my friends. I wanted to keep those memories of playing Minecraft and building together. It was the next day when I had the idea to make a page on the different builds we had made. All 3 generations of the server layed out. Not only did it give me satisfaction knowing I finally had something on my webpage, but it also gave me ideas. Slowly over the following days I thought of more ideas and wrote them as pages. I used them to experiment with formatting and embedding. Now I'm writing the last page until the release of the website. It's ok if you don't have ideas immediately. Allow yourself to take some time to think and be bored. They'll come eventually.

Closing Words

I think I'm going to keep this page without too solid of a conclusion, just because I might want to come back and add more. If I do, I'm guessing I'm going to link a part 2 to this page right below here.
